Personal journals, teaching narratives, and the unfiltered account of what it actually looks like to build music programs from the ground up — written from inside the classroom, not outside of it.

Daniel James Felton is a music educator, composer, and musician whose career has been defined by building programs where few existed and advocating for students who are too often left at the margins of what music education considers its success stories.
His path into music education began internationally, teaching alongside some of the most culturally diverse student populations in the world before returning to the United States to build programs across schools in the Midwest. In every room he entered, Felton brought the same approach: understand who the students are, build from what they need, and never let the absence of resources become the ceiling of what a program can be.
Over nearly a decade in the classroom, he created drumline courses that had never previously been offered, overhauled general music programs, and designed new curriculum frameworks that gave students meaningful access to musical instruction — particularly in schools where that access had historically been limited or absent. His work has been anchored in culturally relevant pedagogy, drawing on the scholarship of Ladson-Billings and the laboratory-style philosophy of Randall Allsup to build classrooms that respond to students rather than ask students to conform.
“I had to ask myself if I simply wanted to instruct music or if I desired to be a musician educator, and I chose that day.” — Daniel James Felton · Cut Times Paper No. 1
As a composer and working musician, Felton brings a practitioner’s ear to everything he writes. He understands music not only as a subject to be taught but as a living discipline that demands ongoing engagement, honest listening, and a willingness to sit in the discomfort of what a piece of music is actually doing. That perspective runs through every paper published on Cut Times.

Felton has produced over 100 research papers, academic works, and classroom journals across his career — documenting program development, curriculum design, pedagogical frameworks, and the day-to-day realities of teaching music in schools where the work is necessary and the resources are not always proportionate to the need. That body of work forms the archive that Cut Times was built to house.
At Cut Times, he serves as Senior Writer — applying the same standards of rigor, honesty, and care that defined his classroom practice to every piece he publishes. The Journey is where that story begins.
